What you can make

01

Make a coordinated change across several source files, then review the Git diff.

02

Create regression tests or update documentation alongside a focused bug fix.

Maintainer-hosted transcripts show app creation, multi-file edits and debugging; historical examples, not our hands-on test.

What it takes to run

Terminal + model connection

  • Install Aider using its documented Python-based installer; an isolated environment is recommended.
  • Open the project directory and configure a model-provider API key or a running local model endpoint such as Ollama.
  • Use Git and the project's own test tools to review and verify changes.

The real tradeoffs

Cost & licensing

Running costs

No software license fee; hosted-model use is billed by the chosen provider. Local inference uses your own hardware.

Open-source code does not mean free cloud inference. Usage and context size affect API spend; local models still require compute and storage.

Code license

Apache-2.0

Read the code license

Models & other terms

Agent software, not a model-weight release; model licenses and API terms are separate.

The code license does not grant rights to a selected model or hosted provider service.

Know the limitations

  • Works with one Git repository at a time.
  • Edit reliability depends on the model, context selection and edit format; changes still need review and tests.
  • Local models need sufficient hardware and a correctly configured context window.
